Avoid the Commute: Chicago Sky at Allstate Arena

24 July 2010 No Comment

Four weeks ago I had the same predicament. Attend the Friday afternoon Cubs game, the Milwaukee Brewers night game or the Chicago Sky game. Most people would never consider attending a WNBA game over a Major League Baseball game but that is what I ended up deciding today for obvious reasons. First, I had to work – meaning the afternoon baseball game was out. Second, even though I am working in the northwest suburbs, I would get home too late from Milwaukee – probably around midnight.

Thus, the Chicago Sky was the only option. Some may even think why even go. I’ll tell you why. On a summer Friday in Chicago, traffic starts in the early, early afternoon. If I have not left by noon (the time which I need to leave work in order to get to the Friday afternoon Cubs game), then it will take me 90 to 120 minutes to get home – a normal 35 minute commute without traffic.

However, on my commute home I pass the Allstate Arena. Thus, whenever there is a game at the Allstate Arena I usually stop. Since the Sky moved to Allstate Arena this season, this was my third WNBA game of the season – the most I have attended in one season.

Beg, Borrow and Deal and Parking
Usually, there are no scalpers at WNBA events. In order to get a free ticket you need to find one from a fan. Since there were no scalpers and I did not find an extra ticket as I approached the box office, I bought the cheapest ticket from the box office for $15.

As usual, I parked in the Target parking lot adjacent to the Allstate Arena. This time I parked closer to Allstate Arena than I normally do and my car was still there when the game was over.

New York Liberty at Chicago Sky
Chicago surrendered a nine-point third quarter lead and lost to New York 79-71 after the Liberty took went on a 10-0 run to take a 71-61 lead.
