Tips from a Scalper: Diamondbacks at Cubs

29 April 2010 No Comment

The Diamondbacks scored five runs in the fourth inning and seven runs in the seventh inning which lead them to a 13-1 win over the Cubs today. Not the most exciting game if you are a Cubs fan. But there was some “off-field” entertainment that kept the game interesting.

First, Mexicans protested Arizona’s new immigration law outside of Wrigley Field since the Cubs was playing Arizona. Second, Vancouver Canucks fans were booed incessantly as they walked along the aisle between the 100 and 200 sections. The Chicago Blackhawks are opening up their second round playoff series against the Canucks on Saturday night.

Tips from a Ticket Scalper
But, perhaps the most informative part of the game for me was when a ticket scalper (whom I recognized from outside of Wrigley Field) sat down next to me in the 100 level. First, I was surprised ticket scalpers actually attended games. However, when they get tickets for as cheap as they do they might as well attend the game.

Second, he confirmed what I write about in the ticket buying guide. His main tip was to check out StubHub before the game. If you are aggressive with buying tickets, you should be able to buy tickets for ¼ of the current price on StubHub and resell them for ½ the price on StubHub. Admittedly, most fans will not be reselling their tickets so if you are looking for an easy negotiation and still want to save a lot of money plan to spend half of StubHub’s current price for the seats you want to buy.

Post Game Dining
After the game I met some friends at Murphy’s. Murphy’s is the quintessential Wrigleyville bar. If you are looking for a good deal then Murphy’s is not the place for you. But in order to make your Wrigleyville experience complete you should stop in for at least one beer.

Next, I went to Pizza Rustica for dinner with the wife. Pizza Rustica is one of the best deals in the area. The food is excellent and you’ll save a lot of money on alcohol since the restaurant is BYOB. There is a liquor store near the Sheridan el station if needed.
