The Sound of One Hand Clapping

22 April 2008 No Comment

Let me be clear in saying that this blog may have a Cubs slant, but it is more focused on sports fandemonium, in general. So, I was deeply conflicted on whether to post this at all.

One of my loyal readers, who I will call “British Bob,” sent me this video with the intention of making my blood boil. The video is Red’s announcer, Marty Brennaman, ripping on Chicago Cubs Fans with an intense amount of disdain.

I recently wrote about my equation for loyalty and hatred in sports. Thou shall hate your worst enemy as an expression of your dedication to your team.

I am not sure what to do when a particular team, who you never even consider, starts ripping on you. I am stumped on this. As a Cubs fan, I never think of the Reds…all my emotional anger is targeted on the South Side and the Cards.

I feel kind of embarrassed for Marty. The Cubs are the lovable losers. The World cheers for them- which makes a 100 years of losing a palatable plight.

But, Marty, we never think or waste time hating the Reds. So, expressing such anger at us is…well, kind of cute. Its like a nerdy little girl, with an intense infatuation with the head football player. After years of being ignored, she bitterly lashes out. But, who notices? Its like the proverbially sound of one hand clapping? Who heard it? And, Marty, who cares?

If this video makes your blood boil too, please just focus on Marty’s retro gray fro and the gold watch. If that doesn’t make you smile, then you don’t have a pulse.
