NHL Finals Game 5: Flyers at Blackhawks

7 June 2010 No Comment

Before Game 4 of the NHL Finals in Philadelphia ticket prices for Game 5 were insane. On StubHub, SRO tickets were priced at $650 each upper level seats were $1000 each. At these prices, I would have stayed home and watched Game 5 on television. But, the Blackhawks lost Game 4 and tickets prices went into a free fall.

Beg, Borrow and Deal
I figured my best bet for buying tickets last night was to once again show up at Billy Goat Tavern. That was a good strategy for Game 1 when tickets were similarly priced. But, first I wanted to see if any tickets were available at the box office. As was the case with Game 2, the game was completely sold out so I walked down Madison St.

There were several scalpers congregated outside of Billy Goat’s. One scalper who I know had upper level seats for $325 each. Another scalper had upper level seats for $350 each. I chose to wait it out to see what if I could find a better deal.

Once again, I found my ticket inside of Billy Goat’s. At 5:20 pm, a season ticket holder walked into Billy Goat’s and talked to a scalper I recognized. His asking price must have been too high for the scalper because he passed on the ticket. I asked him if he had a single and he did. He wanted $300 for the upper level seat in row 16. I offered him $250 for the ticket and we eventually agreed on $280. About 15-20% less than the ticket scalpers wanted. About an hour later (6:20 pm) no upper level seats were available and SRO tickets were now hovering around $350 each. I made a good decision to buy early when I had the chance.

Pre Game Dining
Since I got to Billy Goat’s early with Hospitality Jim to buy a ticket we decided to stay for awhile after. Billy Goat Tavern is a great pre or post-game bar especially if tickets are scarce or if you have extra tickets to sell. First, ticket scalpers swarm outside and inside looking for sellers and buyers. Second, they serve food and drinks in a relaxed atmosphere so you can still have a good time while looking for tickets. Third, you never know who will walk in. Before Game 2, the Ultimate Sports Wife took our picture with Illinois Governor Quinn. Tonight, Frank Thomas walked in to go to the bathroom and grab a burger.

NHL Finals Game 5: Philadelphia Flyers at Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks reversed their fortunes after losing two straight in Philadelphia (home ice probably helped) and won Game 5 of the NHL Finals 7-4. They take a 3-2 lead heading back to Philadelphia for Game 6.

Philadelphia’s goal tender Michael Leighton was pulled for the second game at the United Center as the Blackhawks took a 3-0 lead in the first period.
