Football Friendly at Soldier Field

This weekend is all about soccer. But, if you really want to sound like you know what you are talking about, especially to Europeans, start calling “soccer”…”football.”
Tonight, the Mexican National team (or El Tricolor to the fans) will be playing a “friendly” against Peru at Soldier Field. A friendly is an exhibition game but don’t be mislead by the name. These matches are still fiercely competitive since the teams are the “warming-up” for international tournaments and experimenting with strategies and substitutions. For instance, the World Cup qualifiers for World Cup 2010 are as early as this September.
Beyond the technical stuff, for the fans, friendlies feel like they’re the real deal because it is a chance to see your national team play on an international field; friendly or not…who cares? Football fans come out of the woodwork to see real international football on American soil. It is like being transported to somewhere in Europe or Latin America where football is king and fans are fanatic.
If you can’t make it to Soldier Field, make your way to your nearest Irish or English pub and start watching Euro Cup football. Saturday was the opening match and and everyday through the next three weeks, it is all football…all the time.
