Results for Qualifying Round 1
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - GAINESVILLE - Notes from round 1
qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th
annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed
time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 9.523/76.87, Now #1
1:46 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 70 percent, barometer 29.61 inches, adjusted altitude 2,502 feet, track temperature 94 degrees. There is a stiff breeze blowing across the track, from right to left.

Millican's first official pass of the 2008 season lasted just 200 feet, then he started hazing the tires and shut off.

Left Lane: Doug Foley Runs 6.953/143.96, Now #2
Right Lane: Mitch King Runs 5.438/180.81, Now #1
Foley shook, pedaled and lifted. King started dropping cylinders before half track and shut it off.
Left Lane: Luigi Novelli No Time, Now #6
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 6.549/130.87, Now #2
Novelli's car had some problems on the burnout and they shut it off, then pushed it back to the starting line so Litton could make a pass.

Litton made a good run to 300 feet, then started smoking the tires and lifted.

Left Lane: M. Gunderson Runs 4.746/316.01, Now #2
Right Lane: Urs Erbacher Runs 4.700/314.31, Now #1
No pending records, but two clean runs and the two were under power at the finish line, a big improvement over the first few pairs.
Left Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 4.770/304.74, Now #3
Right Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 5.695/165.99, Now #5
Kalitta had cylinders out early in the run. Bradshaw's car started chattering the tires and he did a nice job of pedaling to save the run, but the engine paid the price at the finish line, with strange header flames and lots of white smoke. Bradshaw was close to the centerline on the top end, but was safely on his side of it.
Left Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 13.027/77.88, Now #10
Right Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 4.620/318.09, Now #1
Todd lost traction and got very sideways right off the starting line. Herbert made a nice-looking pass, right down the groove.
Left Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 10.321/74.94, Now #11
Right Lane: Hillary Will Runs 5.989/162.04, Now #7
Bob Frey recommends Will's blog about her troop visits as a "good read."

Oh-for-two, Vandergriff losing traction about 200 feet out, Will about 300. Will blipped the throttle a second time, which will move her toward the back of the lineup for the second qualifying session.

The track was cloud-shaded through Pro Stock, but now it's mostly sunshine and the track is probably over 100 degrees and climbing.

Left Lane: B. Bernstein Runs 4.750/273.39, Now #4
Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 4.762/313.15, Now #5
Both runs looked good right up to about 1,000 feet, but both cars had at least one dead cylinder on the left side from the "hit." Then there was a flash of flame from Bernstein's engine, his speed falling off, but it looked like a misfire, the engine appeared to stay together and there was no oil on the track.

From the top end, Bernstein admitted to a mental error, the car moving abruptly when it came out from behind the stands and he briefly lifted, causing the misfire.

Left Lane: Antron Brown Runs 4.640/317.64, Now #2
Right Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 4.720/289.20, Now #4
This is the first race this season where Brown has run before, on the motorcycle.

Two good-looking runs, but Fuller appeared to shut off early.

Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.587/324.36, Now #1
Right Lane: David Grubnic Runs 4.702/311.05, Now #5
At the last second, just before Cory Mac staged, Mike Green went over and adjusted something. Whatever it was, it worked nicely, the Fram dragster smoothly down the groove and into the fifties. The "Technicoat Cowboys" were standing behind Grubnic's car - and on the side of the car for this race. Grubnic made an okay run, no problems, but Cory Mac steadily pulled away from him.

Cory McClenathan's incremental times: 60ft-0.871 sec., 330ft-2.200, 660ft-3.127/272.56mph, 1,000ft-3.908
David Grubnic's incremental times: 60ft-0.881 sec., 330ft-2.243, 660ft-3.190/267.64mph, 1,000ft-3.992

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.677/317.87, Now #4
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 4.697/320.58, Now #5

Results for Qualifying Round 2
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - GAINESVILLE - Notes from final, round 2
qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th
annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed
time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior
elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.624/325.77, Now #3
Best prior run: 9.523/76.87, Was #18
5:13 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 68 percent, barometer 29.58 inches, adjusted altitude 2,555 feet, track temperature 96 degrees.

Millican's second run was the one they wanted on the first - straight and clean, just a trace of tire shake as he passed the tree, and a nice half-track speed.

Clay Millican's incremental times: 60ft-0.898 sec., 330ft-2.237, 660ft-3.165/273.00mph, 1,000ft-3.944

Left Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.755/309.84, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.549/130.87, Was #17
Right Lane: Luigi Novelli Runs 5.825/177.58, Now #17
                                  No Prior Run
Hillary Will was on the bump spot at 5.989 after Millican's run. Litton made a clean run to get in, though that time may not hold up, while Novelli was up in smoke before the 330-foot marker. There was almost an incident as Litton turned off at the first turnoff, the wind blowing his chute into the left lane, where Novelli ran over it.

Now Doug Kalitta is on the bump pot at 5.695.

Left Lane: Hillary Will Runs 4.624/314.75, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.989/162.04, Was #18
Right Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 4.659/318.99, Now #6
Best prior run: 13.027/77.88, Was #21
Nice runs, a pair, and the field shuffles again.

The crosswind doesn't appear to bother the cars much inder power, but they definitley are beinmg moved around when the chutes come out.

That bumped Kalitta and Mitch King.

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.865/295.14, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.695/165.99, Was #18
Right Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 6.027/182.28, Now #20
Best prior run: 10.321/74.94, Was #21
Wow! Both Vandergriff and Kalitta will not be racing on Sunday. Kalitta shook the tires early and never did get on-pace. Vandergriff smoked the tires, pedaled, lost btraction again, and got very sideways on the top end in an attempt to get the car hooked back up.
Left Lane: Mitch King Runs 4.802/302.82, Now #18
Best prior run: 5.438/180.81, Was #18
Right Lane: Doug Foley Runs 4.676/325.85, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.953/143.96, Was #21
Foley made a good-looking run and got into the field. King came up short. Foley bumped Alan Bradshaw, putting Morgan Lucas on the bump spot at 4.762, with Bruce Litton in the 15th spot.
Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 9.332/95.96, Now #17
Best prior run: 4.762/313.15, Was #16
Right Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 4.547/306.95, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.770/304.74, Was #17
If Bradshaw gets back in and Lucas stays in, Bruce Litton will be bumped from the field.

Bradshaw got in, in spades - from the outhouse to the penthouse, though he "blowed it up" in the process. Meanwhile, Lucas lost traction before the 330-foot marker and he will be the "almost-qualifed" driver.

Left Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 4.555/326.71, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.720/289.20, Was #8
Right Lane: B. Bernstein Runs 4.586/330.63, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.750/273.39, Was #10
The remaining drivers are already in the field, but it looks like there could be a lot more position swapping before the round is over, the crew chiefs ale to turn the screws a little tighter now that they know they are going to be racing tomorrow..

The hits just keep coming, Bernstein with top speed of the meet.

Rod Fuller's incremental times: 60ft-0.865 sec., 330ft-2.181, 660ft-3.099/275.56mph, 1,000ft-3.876.
Brandon Bernstein's incremental times: 60ft-0.885 sec., 330ft-2.214, 660ft-3.139/273.72mph, 1,000ft-3.916.

Left Lane: David Grubnic Runs 4.555/327.59, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.702/311.05, Was #14
Right Lane: M. Gunderson Runs 4.743/297.68, Now #15
Best prior run: 4.746/316.01, Was #15
Gunderson is consistent, but if nothing changes he'll be racing Grubnic tomorrow. Grubnic tied Fuller's ET, beat him out for the second spot on speed..

David Grubnic's incremental times: 60ft-0.882 sec., 330ft-2.208, 660ft-3.113/278.35mph, 1,000ft-3.881.

Left Lane: Urs Erbacher Runs 4.678/316.08, Now #13
Best prior run: 4.700/314.31, Was #14
Right Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.612/312.64, Now #6
Best prior run: 4.677/317.87, Was #12
Two nice-looking runs, Dixon moving into the top half, Erbacher moving up to the lucky thirteenth spot.
Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 4.579/326.56, Now #5
Best prior run: 4.697/320.58, Was #14
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 4.558/327.51, Now #4
Best prior run: 4.640/317.64, Was #10
Both these should move into the top half, the question is, "Where will they land."

Two nice runs, both right in the middle of the top half, but Bradshaw stays atop the list. That pushed Doug Herbert and Clay MIllican into the bottom half of the field.

Left Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 4.660/312.06, Now #9
Best prior run: 4.620/318.09, Was #9
Right Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.581/327.59, Now #6
Best prior run: 4.587/324.36, Was #7
Last pair - and the same question.

Herbert lost a couple hundredths, Cory Mac improved a couple and one position, Alan Bradshaw is the #1 qualifier.

Results for Elimination Round 1
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1
eliminations in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th
        annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Larry Dixon (U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Dragste 0.043 4.592 314.97
 (L) Doug Herbert (Snap-On Tools Dragster) 0.046 4.598 322.19
11:08 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 46 percent, barometer 29.84 inches, adjusted altitude 1,950 feet, track temperature 98 degrees.

Dixon is 26 - 10 against Herbert in prior events. This got very close on the top end when Dixon dropped a cylinder, but he was far enough ahead to hold off Herbert and get the light anyway. Larry Dixon's incremental margins: 60ft(0.026), 330 ft(0.033), 660ft(0.039), 1,000ft(0.026). MOV: 0.0096 seconds (approximately 5 feet).

 (W) Brandon Bernstein (Budweiser/Lucas Oil Drag 0.037 4.593 328.38
 (L) Clay Millican (Knoll Gas/SinFuel Choppers D 0.044 4.623 322.34
Bernstein is 5 - 2 against Millican in prior events. This is Millican's first outing of the 2008 season.

Both drivers were on their game on the tree and it was a good race, but Bernstein's car was stronger on the top end and he pulled away for the win. Brandon Bernstein's incremental margins: 60ft(0.008), 330 ft(0.010), 660ft(0.012), 1,000ft(0.023). MOV: 0.0374 seconds (approximately 18 feet).

 (W) Hillary Will (KB Racing Dragster) 0.083 4.582 330.63
 (L) Cory McClenathan (Fram Dragster) 0.087 4.619 318.02
McClenathan is 1 - 0 against Will in prior events. Cory Mac was consistently quick and fast in the two qualifying sessions here, Will had a bad first run and did not run her usual high speed on the second.

Will had the better light and outran McClenathan to get her first round win of the year. It was extremely close to 1,000 feet, Cory Mac leading in the middle of the track, but her big top-end speed was back on this run and gave her the edge on the top end. Hillary Will's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(0.007), 330 ft(-0.005), 660ft(-0.003), 1,000ft(0.015). MOV: 0.0418 seconds (approximately 19 feet).

 (W) Rod Fuller (Caterpillar Dragster) 0.066 4.590 325.85
 (L) Urs Erbacher (Midland Oil Dragster) 0.100 8.559 91.48
This is the first time Erbacher and Fuller have faced each other in eliminations.

Erbacher lost traction about 200 feet out and Fuller wins - with yet another 4.59. The four winners so far have run 4.592, 4.593, 4.582 and 4.590. There's a pattern here somewhere...Fuller faces Will in the second round and Will has lane choice.

 (W) Bruce Litton (Lucas Oil/Stoops Dragster) 0.059 4.655 323.97
 (L) Alan Bradshaw (Vis Viva Living Force Dragst 0.056 8.386 102.79
Bradshaw is the third different #1 qualifier in Top Fuel this year. This is the first time Litton and Bradshaw have faced each other in eliminations.

The jinx strikes again as Bradshaw strikes the tires and Litton goes right down the groove. Litton ran a tenth quicker than he qualified, but loses lane choice to Dixon in round two.

 (W) Antron Brown (Matco Dragster) 0.067 4.604 327.03
 (L) Doug Foley (FXCaprara Kia Dragster) 0.086 4.928 217.56
Obviously these two have never raced each other before, Brown in his first season in Top Fuel and Foley in his first race of the year.

This was close to half track, Brown with a small and diminishing lead, then Foley's blower belt went flying and Brown pulled away for the win.

 (W) Michael Gunderson (Under The Gun Racing Dra 0.095 4.722 305.01
 (L) David Grubnic (Technicoat Dragster) 0.090 11.723 78.69
This is the first time Grubnic and Gunderson have faced each other in eliminations.

Grubnic was up in smoke immediately and Gunderson was the apparent winner, but Gunderson's car started weaving back and forth on the top end and appeared to be very close to the wall a couple times. He stayed in his lane and off the wall for his first round win in Top Fuel, but it was a lot harder than the numbers make it look. He faces Bernstein in round two, Bernstein has lane choice.

 (W) Tony Schumacher (U.S. Army Dragster) 0.083 4.612 314.02
 (L) J.R. Todd (Torco/Lucas Dragster) 0.081 9.647 87.91
Schumacher is 7 - 4 against Todd in prior events.

Todd was up in smoke almost immediately and DSchumacher was unchallenged. However, he loses lane choice to Brown in round two.

Bernstein got very sideways on the burnout, then both drivers went up in smoke early in the run. Both drivers pedaled, but Gunderson failed to regain traction, Bernstein got enough to maintain momentum for the win.
