Results for Qualifying Round 1
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - GAINESVILLE - Notes from round 1
qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th
annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed
time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Matt Scranton Runs 6.911/199.55, Now #1
1:05 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 74 percent, barometer 29.65 inches, adjusted altitude 2,249 feet, track temperature 89 degrees.

Usually the humidity drops as the air heats up. Not so today, it has increased a few percent since this morning - which means we won't be able to run very late tonight before the dew is a problem.

Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 21.354/35.71, Now #3
Right Lane: Dave Northrop Runs 6.748/204.45, Now #1
Nobile has run 500-inch Pro Stock before, but not lately.

Nobile shook the tires hard and lifted immediately. Northrop went right down the track.

Left Lane: Adam Flamholc Runs 6.815/202.85, Now #2
Right Lane: Richard Sundblom Runs 6.844/202.09, Now #3

Left Lane: Jimmy Alund Runs 6.824/201.55, Now #3
Right Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 7.243/202.12, Now #6
Alund is also from Sweden, Spiess is from Illinois and was one of the top mountain-motor racers the past few years.

Spiess shook hard on the launch. Alund made a smooth, straight pass.

Left Lane: Rickie Jones Runs 6.708/205.35, Now #1
Right Lane: Bob Benza Runs 6.817/202.45, Now #4
Jones licensed last weekend in Valdosta and made some very nice test runs.

Jones goes to the top of the list, Benza runs a low eighty - that probably won't do the job after two rounds of qualifying, but it's good for the early runs.

Left Lane: Vinnie Deceglie Runs 6.770/203.55, Now #4
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.732/204.54, Now #2
A couple of runs in the seventies as we work our way to the top points holders.
Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.769/204.85, Now #4
Right Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 6.877/205.10, Now #10
Morgan tested two cars in Valdosta, picked this one to run here.

Both cars had a lot of tire spin on the launch, Morgan 1.028 for 60 feet, Hammond 1.074.

Left Lane: Bill Glidden Runs 6.800/204.35, Now #7
Right Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.746/204.45, Now #3
Koretsky is debuting his Pontiac GXP here (as are several others).

Both were 1.01 for 60 feet.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 6.749/204.73, Now #6
Right Lane: Matt Hartford Runs 6.743/204.48, Now #3
Hartford's new Stratus was the quickest car at Valdosta - up until WJ showed up to test on Wednesday, anyway. Gray also made a couple test laps, with good results.

Both were 1.00 at 60 feet, both made good runs.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.721/205.32, Now #2
Right Lane: Max Naylor Runs 6.802/201.79, Now #11
That humid air appears to be a big factor this round - "you can't burn water."

Both made smooth, straight runs, but Krisher was 1.00 at 60 feet, Naylor 1.02.

Left Lane: Justin Humphreys Runs 6.728/204.85, Now #4
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.703/205.57, Now #1
Finally a sub-one-second 60-foot time, but it was by Humphreys and Stanfield was quicker on the top end with a 1.00 start.
Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.769/202.03, Now #12
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.682/207.53, Now #1
A pair of 1.00 short times and a new #1. WJ's run was awesome by comparison the preceding cars. Warren Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.006 sec., 330ft-2.808, 660ft-4.306/164.69mph, 1,000ft-5.596
Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.692/206.76, Now #3
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.687/206.13, Now #2
All Johnson, all the time. The top three are now Johnson, Johnson and Johnson.

Kurt Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.012 sec., 330ft-2.812, 660ft-4.311/164.63mph, 1,000ft-5.603
Allen Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.998 sec., 330ft-2.796, 660ft-4.299/163.83mph, 1,000ft-5.595

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.741/204.91, Now #10
Right Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.709/205.82, Now #6
Good runs, but not good enough to bother J, J & J.
Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.716/205.72, Now #7
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.719/206.29, Now #8
Last year's champion and last year's runner-up. 1.00 short time for Jeg, 1.01 for Anderson, and WJ remains atop the list at 6.682. Johnny Gray is on the bump spot at 6.749.

Best prior run: 7.243/202.12, Was #28

Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 66 percent, barometer 29.59 inches, adjusted altitude 2,581 feet, track temperature 94 degrees.

Second - and last - shot at the field. Johnny Gray is on the bump spot at 6.749.

Nobile and Spiess come up short in their foray into 500-inch Pro Stock.

Left Lane: Matt Scranton Runs 6.895/199.70, Now #29
Best prior run: 6.911/199.55, Was #29
Right Lane: Jimmy Alund Runs 6.837/201.34, Now #26
Best prior run: 6.824/201.55, Was #26
Both made smooth,. straight runs, Scranton improved slightly, Alund lost a little, neither will race Sunday.
Left Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 6.771/205.60, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.877/205.10, Was #28
Right Lane: Adam Flamholc Runs 6.807/203.09, Now #25
Best prior run: 6.815/202.85, Was #24
Hammonds improved a full tenth, still missed the cut. Flamholc's car kept drifting left, even before he came out from behind the stands, and he only improved a few thousandths.
Left Lane: Bob Benza Runs 6.816/202.27, Now #26
Best prior run: 6.817/202.45, Was #26
Right Lane: Bill Glidden Runs 6.776/203.98, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.800/204.35, Was #23
So far, the big improvements we saw with the motorcycles haven't translated into big changes for the four-wheelers.

Benza ran a near-duplicate of his first run, Glidden improved a bit, neither will race Sunday.

Left Lane: Max Naylor Runs 6.761/201.73, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.802/201.79, Was #24
Right Lane: Vinnie Deceglie Runs 6.744/203.89, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.770/203.55, Was #19
So far there has been a lot of shuffling, but all of it among the non-qualifiers.

Decegl;ie changes that, jumping up to the 14th spot and possibly into his first-ever starting position. We should know in a few more minutes. Meanwhile, Naylor misses the field despite a substantial improvement.

Left Lane: Dave Northrop Runs 6.714/204.76, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.748/204.45, Was #16
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.685/205.57, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.769/202.03, Was #20
Deceglie goes from 14th to the bump spot in just one pair, Northrop and Edwards both making huge improvements from their first run today.
Left Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.773/203.68, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.746/204.45, Was #17
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.761/205.13, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.769/204.85, Was #20
Both were outside the field when they staged their cars. Both were outside the field when they crossed the stripe and Deceglie dodged two big bullets.
Left Lane: Matt Hartford Runs 6.751/204.14, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.743/204.48, Was #15
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 6.741/205.01, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.749/204.73, Was #18
Either Gray or Deceglie will race tomorrow, not both. Gray went right down the groove and bumped Deceglie from the field. In fact, Gray moved in ahead of Hartford, putting Hartford into a first-round matchup with the low qualifier.
Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.713/204.85, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.732/204.54, Was #13
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.715/205.41, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.741/204.91, Was #15
The remaining drivers are already qualified - now we'll see who races whom. Yates had a stunning 0.9836 60-foot timke, but only a small improvement, barely into the top half for now. Gaines was only a couple thousandths slower than Yates, ended up a couple positions lower on the ladder.
Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.689/206.45, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.719/206.29, Was #12
Right Lane: Justin Humphreys Runs 6.709/205.19, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.728/204.85, Was #14
Anderson made a good-looking run, but not good enough to move to the top of the list. Humphreys moved up a couple spots.
Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.705/206.89, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.709/205.82, Was #8
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.736/205.60, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.721/205.32, Was #14
Line m,oved into the top half despite a small wiggle just off the starting line. Krisher was behind at all the timing marks and steadily lost ground, failing to improve.
Left Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.690/205.72, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.703/205.57, Was #6
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.680/206.51, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.716/205.72, Was #13
Stanfield's car made a small move to the left on the launch, then he ran right with Jeg. Jeg went right down the groove and into the top spot.
Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.687/205.79, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.687/206.13, Was #4
Right Lane: Rickie Jones Runs 6.718/205.60, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.708/205.35, Was #9
Jones had his hands full, the car making a hard move to the left on the launch and he scrubbed off a bit of time and speed getting it back to the groove.
Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.665/208.36, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.682/207.53, Was #2
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.665/207.27, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.692/206.76, Was #7
Last pair. Wow! Identical Ets and WJ gets the #1 spot by virtue of speed.

Warren Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.008 sec., 330ft-2.803, 660ft-4.296/165.01mph, 1,000ft-5.583.
Kurt Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.006 sec., 330ft-2.796, 660ft-4.289/165.01mph, 1,000ft-5.578. Matt Hartford is on the bump spot at 6.743 and will race Warren Johnson in the first round tomorrow..

Results for Elimination Round 1
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1
eliminations in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th
        annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Jason Line (Summit Racing Equipment GXP) 0.057 10.440 86.19
 (L) Rickie Jones (Quarter Max Stratus) -0.001(R) 13.259 64.12
12:15 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 43 percent, barometer 29.85 inches, adjusted altitude 2,020 feet, track temperature 101 degrees.

Jones is in his first-ever race, his license about a week old. LIne is debuting his GXP, so both are running brand-new race cars.

Both shook hard, both swerved all over the first 200 feet of the race track and lifted, but Jones went red by the smallest possible margin and Line coasted home with the win light on.

 (W) Justin Humphreys (RaceRedi Motorsports GXP) 0.010 6.692 206.86
 (L) Greg Stanfield (Attitude Apparel GXP) 0.016 6.694 204.94
Stanfield is 1 - 0 against Humphreys in prior events. Stanfield is also debuting his GXP at this race.

This was a very close drag race, with great lights in both lanes. Stanfield had the lead from 330 feet to 1,000 feet, Humphreys edging ahead at the stripe. Justin Humphreys' incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(0.004), 330 ft(-0.011), 660ft(-0.007), 1,000ft(-0.001). MOV: 0.0089 seconds (approximately 3 feet).

 (W) Greg Anderson (Summit Racing Equipment GXP) 0.006 6.635 208.10
 (L) Jim Yates (Wiley X Eye Wear GXP) 0.048 6.677 206.35
Anderson is 20 - 11 against Yates in prior events.

Anderson slapped a huge holeshot on Yates and ran low ET of the weekend (so far) for an easy win. Yates ran his best of the weekend, but was a car length behind at the stripe.

 (W) Allen Johnson (J & J Racing Stratus) 0.082 6.624 207.85
 (L) Dave Northrop (GTO) 0.045 6.747 205.47
This is the first time Northrop and Johnson have faced each other in eliminations.

Northrop nailed the usually prompt Johnson to the tree, but Northrop's car got a bit tail-happy early in the run and gave the advantage back before the 330-foot marker. Johnson kept widening the lead, winning by more than a car length.

 (W) Warren Johnson (GM Performance Parts GXP) 0.068 6.621 209.26
 (L) Matt Hartford (Nickens Brothers Racing Stra 0.039 6.704 206.35
This is the first time Hartford and Johnson have faced each other in eliminations, Hartford in just his third round of eliminations.

Hartford left first, but then it was all Johnson, who had the lead at the 60-foot timer and won going away, running low ET and top speed of the meet. He will have lane choice against Line in round two.

 (W) Mike Edwards (Young Life/Penhall GTO) 0.022 6.655 206.07
 (L) V. Gaines (Kendall Oil Stratus) 0.041 6.650 206.48
Edwards is 8 - 7 against Gaines in prior events.

He extends his advantage on a holeshot, leading all the way. Mike Edwards' incremental margins: 60ft(0.019), 330 ft(0.015), 660ft(0.012), 1,000ft(0.013). MOV: 0.0140 seconds (approximately 4 feet). He faces Allen Johnson in round two, Johnson has lane choice.

 (W) Jeg Coughlin (Jegs.com Cobalt) 0.062 6.618 207.62
 (L) Ron Krisher (Valvoline Cobalt) 0.043 6.687 207.56
Coughlin is 22 - 11 against Krisher in prior events.

Krisher had the apparent advantage on the tree, but Coughlin was ahead at 60 feet and pulling away, resetting low ET of the meet. He will have lane choice against Anderson in round two.

 (W) Johnny Gray (Stratus) 0.062 6.774 204.79
 (L) Kurt Johnson (AC Delco Cobalt) 0.092 6.773 206.45
Last pair. This is the first time Gray and Johnson have faced each other in eliminations. Gray pulls off the upset of the round, maybe of the event, with a holeshot win - albeit there was only a thousandth difference in their elapsed times. Johnny Gray's incremental margins: 60ft(0.011), 330 ft(0.029), 660ft(0.042), 1,000ft(0.036). MOV: 0.0292 seconds (approximately 9 feet). Gray faces Humphreys in round two, Humphreys has lane choice.

 (W) Jason Line (Summit Racing Equipment GXP) 0.028 6.670 208.65
 (L) Warren Johnson (GM Performance Parts GXP) 0.024 13.278 64.55
WJ's car is also a new one, a '08 GTO. Line is 7 - 6 against Johnson in prior events.

WJ shook hard and shut it down. Line was second off the line, with a very good light, and his car shook slightly and went to the right, but he was able to recover and make the quickest pass he's made with his new car. He will have lane chocie against Edwards in the semifinals.

 (W) Jeg Coughlin (Jegs.com Cobalt) 0.010 6.645 208.07
 (L) Greg Anderson (Summit Racing Equipment GXP) 0.026 6.631 208.78
On a holeshot (and Anderson was not late), Coughlin held Greg off on the top end. He was closing fast, came up about 8 inches short.
