1:16 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative humidity 26 percent, barometer 29.00 inches, adjusted altitude 2,160 feet, track temperature 89 degrees.

This will be the first run at a National Event in A/FD for Courtney Force. The dragster was a little soft the line and keep most of the cylinders firing down track. Ahten makes a careen best pass in the other lane with a number of cylinders out near the finish line.

Left Lane: Jeff Isbell Runs 5.516/250.46, Now #2
Right Lane: Brian Smith Runs 14.512/76.28, Now #4
Two more fuelers to the line. Smith strikes the tires at the green, while Isbell makes a clean pass into the current #2 spot.
Left Lane: Edwin Schmeeckle Runs 5.561/259.81, Now #3
Right Lane: Mike Austin Runs 12.219/63.84, Now #5
Two dragsters with 'huffers this time. Lots of shake for Austin off the line and then the back end of the car steps out. He lifts and watches Schmeeckle make a full pull into the current #3 spot.
Left Lane: Mark Niver Runs 5.881/239.74, Now #6
Right Lane: Larry Miersch Runs 5.589/242.28, Now #5
These two have a lot of passes down the Pomona asphalt. Lots of raw fuel out of both cars al the way to the finish line. Miersch gets the better of the two runs.
Left Lane: Randy Eakins Runs 5.549/249.07, Now #3
Right Lane: Brandon Lewis Runs 5.614/259.86, Now #7
Lots of shake for Lewis about a 100 feet out. He drives through it and still runs a sixty. Eakins makes a clean pass into the current #3 spot.
Left Lane: Brandon Johnson Runs 5.440/267.16, Now #2
Right Lane: Shawn Cowie Runs 5.645/264.49, Now #9
The right lane continues to provide headache tire shake. Cowie gets his share this time. Nice looking pass for Johnson into the new #2 spot.
Left Lane: Chris Demke Runs 7.270/126.00, Now #12
Right Lane: Joey Severance Runs 5.511/262.23, Now #3
Major right hand turn under power for Demke hard towards the center line. The car is almost full sideways before he lifts. Severance is long gone and hard to find in the right lane and takes over the current #3 spot.
Left Lane: Dave DeAngelis Runs 5.509/259.66, Now #4
Right Lane: Kate Harker Runs 5.383/249.72, Now #1
Harker keeps the cylinders lite until just before the lights and powers into the new #1 spot. DeAngelis is the seventh car in the fifties with a clean pass.
Left Lane: Duane Shields Runs 15.821/72.61, Now #18
Right Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.397/267.32, Now #2
Shields car jumps up on the tires with 3 feet and then starts to smoke them hard. Whiteley shows that the blown cars can run quick too and makes a clean and straight pass into the current #2 spot.
Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 5.280/271.08, Now #1
Right Lane: Thomas Bayer Runs 5.558/259.16, Now #10
Mike Austin is on the bump spot at 12.219. Your 2008 #2 and #3 cars come to the line.

Say Hello to your new number one qualifier and the first twenty of the year. Nice pass! Bayer's car is loose down low and then snakes it's way to the finish line.

1:52 p.m. Mark Niver is on the bump spot at 5.881.

Results for Qualifying Round 2
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 1 - Notes from round 2 qualifying in
Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 48th
annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals listing lane, driver name,
elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best
prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Brian Smith Runs 21.108/51.35, Now #19
Best prior run: 14.512/76.28, Was #18
Right Lane: Brandon Johnson Runs 5.521/263.56, Now #8
                                  No Prior Run
12:19 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative humidity 30 percent, barometer 28.94 inches, adjusted altitude 2,440 feet, track temperature 91 degrees.

Johnson's run was DQ'ed yesterday, but no info as to why. Smith's car jumps up on the tires at the hit and immediately go up in smoke. If there aren't any tech. problems this time, Johnson's strong and clean pass will move him into the current top half of the field

Mark Niver is on the bump spot at 5.881.

Left Lane: Mike Austin Runs 6.049/203.43, Now #17
Best prior run: 12.219/63.84, Was #18
Right Lane: Duane Shields Runs 11.853/82.86, Now #19
Best prior run: 15.821/72.61, Was #20
Both of these drivers are top half of the field caliber. Hard shake and spin for Shields off the line and Austin's blown car didn't sound like it shifted. Both cars slow and Austin just misses the current field.
Left Lane: Shawn Cowie Runs 5.483/264.03, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.645/264.49, Was #15
Right Lane: Chris Demke Runs 5.449/262.13, Now #5
Best prior run: 7.270/126.00, Was #18
Cowie drives through the shake at the shift and chases Demke down the track. Two big improvements and they end up #5 and #6 for now.
Left Lane: Brandon Lewis Runs 5.439/265.69, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.614/259.86, Was #16
Right Lane: Mark Niver Runs 5.475/251.49, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.881/239.74, Was #17
Brandon Lewis is on the bump spot at 5.614. There weren't sixteen cylinders running at the top end, but both fuelers bang and grumble into the top half of the field. Ugly, but enough for now...
Left Lane: Larry Miersch Runs 13.678/81.65, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.589/242.28, Was #17
Right Lane: Courtney Force Runs 5.506/261.32, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.566/253.95, Was #16
Courtney Force is now on the bump spot at 5.566. Nice pass for the new Force Team into the middle of the current field. Miersch's car strikes the tires and slows.
Left Lane: Thomas Bayer Runs 5.434/260.16, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.558/259.16, Was #15
Right Lane: Edwin Schmeeckle Runs 5.614/251.58, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.561/259.81, Was #16
Edwin Schmeeckle is on the bump spot at 5.561. Looks like a pattern here. No joy for Schmeeckle, as they slow a little from yesterday. Bayer gets all of it and thunders on down into the current #5 spot. Nice pass!
Left Lane: Joey Severance Runs 5.370/265.17, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.511/262.23, Was #12
Right Lane: Randy Eakins Runs 5.535/250.88, Now #15
Best prior run: 5.549/249.07, Was #15
Can you say Parity? Severance cars a great looking thirty-seven in a blown alcohol dragster and moves into the #2 spot. Eakins nibbles at the ET and MPH to stay #15 for now.

Joey Severance's incremental times: 60ft-0.924 sec., 330ft-2.384, 660ft-3.535/214.55mph, 1,000ft-4.524

Left Lane: Johnny Ahten Runs 25.334/25.71, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.420/253.52, Was #5
Right Lane: Jeff Isbell Runs 5.551/250.55, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.516/250.46, Was #13
Ahten goes over center this time and strikes the tires at the green. Isbell basically repeats his performance from yesterday.
Left Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.395/264.91, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.397/267.32, Was #4
Right Lane: Dave DeAngelis Runs 5.459/256.41, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.509/259.66, Was #12
Whiteley makes another great looking pass in the thirties, but will stay #5 for now. DeAngelis finds a nickle and moves up three spots on the ladder.
Left Lane: Kate Harker Runs 16.605/51.47, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.383/249.72, Was #3
Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 5.290/270.21, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.280/271.08, Was #1
Harker joins the up in smoke in the left lane club and slows. Lucas plays bracket racer and runs within 0.010 of yesterdays best.

Edwin Schmeeckle is on the bump spot at 5.561.

3:58 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative humidity 19 percent, barometer 28.91 inches, adjusted altitude 2,667 feet, track temperature 92 degrees.

Final chance to qualify and Edwin Schmeeckle is on the bump spot at 5.561. It's ugly, but Shields finally gets a full pull and moves into the current top half of the field. Not a lot of cylinders firing on either car at the finish line. Smith picks up a bunch over his first two attempts and will still miss the show this weekend.

Left Lane: Edwin Schmeeckle Runs 5.473/260.71, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.561/259.81, Was #18
Right Lane: Mike Austin Runs 5.705/254.23, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.049/203.43, Was #20
Randy Eakins is on the bump spot at 5.535. Schmeeckle runs a little faster and a bunch quicker to move into the field for now. Austin fought the car from 330 to the finish line and must have gone 1500 feet doing it.
Left Lane: Randy Eakins Runs 5.681/250.27, Now #18
Best prior run: 5.535/250.88, Was #17
Right Lane: Larry Miersch Runs 5.528/256.75, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.589/242.28, Was #19
Brandon Johnson is on the bump spot at 5.521. Eakins engine is dropping cylinders down track and slows. Miersch keeps more candle lit, longer, but still misses the bump. Both cars are done for the weekend.
Left Lane: Brandon Johnson Runs 5.778/251.95, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.521/263.56, Was #16
Right Lane: Shawn Cowie Runs 5.388/267.59, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.483/264.03, Was #13
Johnson continues to struggle and has holes out at 330 to stay on the bump. Nice pass for Cowie, as he picks up almost two hundreds and nine spots on the qualifying ladder. Shawn Cowie's incremental times: 60ft-0.955 sec., 330ft-2.410, 660ft-3.559/215.24mph, 1,000ft-4.547
Left Lane: Jeff Isbell Runs 5.550/252.57, Now #15
Best prior run: 5.516/250.46, Was #15
Right Lane: Brandon Lewis Runs 5.569/258.17, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.439/265.69, Was #8
Isbell has Bill Reichert out on the line helping with the tune up. Things go from bad [slower ET] to worse [into the sand, almost to the net] for Isbell. Both cars were dropping cylinders down track and Lewis slows the most.

4:16 p.m.

Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 5.806/249.16, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.506/261.32, Was #14
Right Lane: Thomas Bayer Runs 5.479/238.26, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.434/260.16, Was #7
4:21 p.m. and we are back to qualifying. The Darien tune-up was too strong this time and the engine starts dropping cylinders by the 330 lights. Bayer was on a good pass until near the top end where engine problems slowed the Toyo Tires dragster.
Left Lane: Dave DeAngelis Runs 5.453/256.11, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.459/256.41, Was #11
Right Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.332/267.80, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.395/264.91, Was #5
DeAngelis drives through the shake and improves slightly, but will stay #11 Whiteley's blown car picks up ET and MPH and move three spots up the ladder to the current #2 spot. Nice looking pass!
Left Lane: Chris Demke Runs 5.554/236.38, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.449/262.13, Was #10
Right Lane: Kate Harker Runs 11.708/67.80, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.383/249.72, Was #4
Well, that was ugly! Demke's engine started puffing out of the right side pipes several times down the track and then the car disappeared in a major cloud of oil smoke near the 1000 foot lights. Harker's car was lazy off the line and she clicked it early.

4:30 p.m. Lots of activity in the left lane near the finish line to begin the big clean up of Stuff...

Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 5.325/260.36, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.280/271.08, Was #1
Right Lane: Joey Severance Runs 5.399/238.26, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.370/265.17, Was #3
4:42 p.m. That took a while! Last pair to attempt to improve on their positions... Lucas is already #1 and doesn't improve. Both cars make representative passes for the conditions, but lots of dropped cylinders and engine smoke at the top end. Expensive!!

Brandon Johnson is on the bump spot at 5.521.

Results for Elimination Round 1
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1
eliminations in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 48th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Duane Shields (Shortline Express A/FD) 0.075 5.391 270.32
 (L) Brandon Lewis (A-1 Auto Body A/FD) 0.054 5.535 256.21
2:09 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative humidity 18 percent, barometer 28.94 inches, adjusted altitude 2,676 feet, track temperature 98 degrees.

Shields was the winner here in 2006 and is running a new car here this weekend. He makes his second full pass of the weekend and it's a sweet one. Good ET and great MPH to boot. Lewis had the advantage off the line, but fell back after the 330 lights.

 (W) Joey Severance (Severance Racing B/AD) 0.071 5.322 265.64
 (L) Courtney Force (Darien & Meadows TA/D) 0.231 5.677 249.12
This will be Force's first round of eliminations in Top Alcohol Dragster. Crew Chief Jerry Darien is alway dangerous in the first round. Unfortunately, the car slowed and she was late. Severance celebrates his daughter Preslie Lynn's 1st birthday with a career best ET and the first round win. Great looking pass for the blown car.
 (W) Jeff Isbell (A/FD) 0.069 5.550 255.63
 (L) Jim Whiteley (Y'NOT Racing B/AD) 0.124 5.649 260.56
Isbell is making his debut in a Nito car this weekend and is away first and never headed. That's four passes in the low to mid-five fifties. Whiteley was second off the line and couldn't match his prior performance.
 (W) Shawn Cowie (Mundies Towing B/AD) 0.089 5.376 268.81
 (L) Edwin Schmeeckle (LSS Racing B/AD) 0.046 5.508 256.31
Schmeeckle was away first and lead until after the 330 lights. Cowie was on another great pass and pulled steadily away for a decisive 30 foot plus win. Nice race to mid-track.
 (W) Chris Demke (Peen-Rite-Abrasive Finishing B 0.029 5.455 263.36
 (L) Thomas Bayer (Toyo Tires B/AD) 0.102 5.512 259.86
Bayer is making his eighth start in his blown alcohol dragster after great success in the lower stops man classes. This time Demke has all the numbers and pulls steadily ahead for the big win. Bayer has some shake down low and slows from his prior best.
 (W) Dave DeAngelis (JC Auto Glass B/AD) 0.096 5.448 256.36
 (L) Johnny Ahten (Hedman Hedders/Stump Puller A -9.999(R) NT-Broke After Staging
That was weird! Ahten starts his car first and it sounds terrible. He pulls the car over to the wall after an aborted burnout and the crew pushes him back. DeAngelis didn't even try to start his engine until after all of the drama in the right lane.

Nothing wrong with the JC Auto Glass TAD. The Yancer car leaves well and has the power to improve on his qualifying numbers. Nice pass...

 (W) Kate Harker (TORCO Skull Shine A/FD) 0.094 5.424 263.26
 (L) Larry Miersch (Miersch Racing A/FD) 0.030 11.693 83.98
After a great 0.030 RT, Miersch spins the tires at the hit, double pumps it and then gives it up. Harker is taking no prisoners and makes her fastest pass of the weekend to move solidly to round two
 (W) Morgan Lucas (Lucas Oil Special A/FD) 0.073 5.348 263.72
 (L) Brandon Johnson (Ti-Xp Xtreme Springs A/FD) 0.055 5.629 255.77
Lucas has three #1 qualifying positions at the Winternations. Since 1981, only four #1 qualifiers have go on to win the event. Johnson is the defending Champion, introducing his injected car in 2007. He gets a small initial advantage in RT, but Lucas is quickly ahead and never looks back.

2:35 p.m. In round two: Lucas will have lane choice over Shields; Cowie over Harker; Demke over Isbell; and Severance over DeAngelis.

Results for Elimination Round 2
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2
eliminations in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 48th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Joey Severance (Severance Racing B/AD) 0.056 5.329 266.58
 (L) Dave DeAngelis (JC Auto Glass B/AD) 0.056 5.547 252.66
1:05 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 19 percent, barometer 28.94 inches, adjusted altitude 2,874 feet, track temperature 101 degrees.

Great pass for Severance. The two dragsters leave together at the green and then DeAngelis has to watch Severance pull steadily away for the decisive win. He runs better than be qualified again and close to yesterday's better weather times.

 (W) Duane Shields (Shortline Express A/FD) 0.046 5.319 268.71
 (L) Morgan Lucas (Lucas Oil Special A/FD) 0.077 5.485 261.93
Shields is finding what the new car wants and runs even quicker than before! Lucas never had a chance as the power just wasn't there.
 (W) Kate Harker (TORCO Skull Shine A/FD) 0.110 5.509 260.81
 (L) Shawn Cowie (Mundies Towing B/AD) 0.112 5.509 244.87
Both cars leave together within 0.002 in RT. Lots of shake for Harker. She pumps it and chases Cowie. It looked like a win for him until just past the 1000 foot lights, where the engine died impressively. Harker just gets by for the with an identical ET. Kate Harker's incremental times: 60ft-0.945 sec., 330ft-2.486, 660ft-3.670/213.03mph, 1,000ft-4.656. Kate Harker's MOV: 0.0027 seconds (approximately 12 inches).

Shields will have lane choice in round three.

 (W) Jeff Isbell (A/FD) 0.081 5.704 243.50
 (L) Chris Demke (Peen-Rite-Abrasive Finishing B 0.050 6.227 163.87
Demke gets away first and keeps a significant lead until after half track where the engine expired in a cloud of smoke. Isbell was slow on this pass from the starting line on, but gets the win anyway. Luck is Good!

1:20 p.m. Severance will keep lane choice in the next round.

 (W) Joey Severance (Severance Racing B/AD) 0.043 5.350 266.79
 (L) Jeff Isbell (A/FD) 0.076 5.790 245.94
2:50 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 81 degrees, relative humidity 17 percent, barometer 28.93 inches, adjusted altitude 2,924 feet, track temperature 96 degrees.

Another strong pass in the heat of the day gives an easy win to the blown car of Severance. Isbell slows from his prior best.

 (W) Duane Shields (Shortline Express A/FD) 0.060 5.543 260.11
 (L) Kate Harker (TORCO Skull Shine A/FD) 0.079 11.182 74.06
That was ugly. Harker's car runs out of power after the 330 lights and Shields' car drops cylinders all the way to the finish line.

2:57 p.m. Severance will have lane choice by a bunch in the final.

Results for Final Round
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4
eliminations in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series, 48th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Duane Shields (Shortline Express A/FD) 0.037 5.377 270.00
 (L) Joey Severance (Severance Racing B/AD) -0.011(R) 16.041 52.83
4:40 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 21 percent, barometer 28.90 inches, adjusted altitude 2,931 feet, track temperature 86 degrees.

Severance has beat Shields in their two prior final round appearance, but he throws this one away with an -0.011 red light. Shields was ready for the bad blown car and cards another great ET and MPH. This is the first race for the new race car and it paid off in spades.
