Dateline:

A crowd of 27,431 gathered at Arlington Park on Saturday August
17th for the biggest day of racing in Illinois. The International
Festival of Racing includes the Arlington Million, the Beverly D.,
and the Secretariat Stakes, all important Breeders' Cup preps,
especially this year since Arlington will be the host track for the
Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships.
This was the 20th running of the Arlington Million and the
powerful team of trainer Bobby Frankel and jockey Jerry Bailey
brought Beat Hollow to the Million as the odds-on favorite. He
tracked the pacesetter Forbidden Apple in third for the first six
furlongs then gutted out the win by a nose in a long stretch duel
which culminated in six horses being separated by less than a
length. His arch rival Sarafan closed for second while Forbidden
Apple held on for third.

In the Beverly D. six female turf stars took to the track,
including last year's winner England's Legend and last year's
favorite Astra. Both were to be denied this year by the California
based Golden Apples, who broke slowly but rallied three wide into
the stretch to win by 3/4 of a length in 1:54.86 for the 1 3/16
miles. England's Legend tried to lead the whole distance, but
couldn't hold off the winner or Astra who rallied to beat her by a
nose for second.

The 3-year-old turf specialists were showcased in the Secretariat
Stakes. Orchard Park was sent off the favorite at 7-5, having won 5
of 6 starts this year. However, it was not his day and he never made
a move, finishing last. Instead the second choice, Chiselling,
rallied six wide to collar Jazz Beat in the final stride while front
runner Extra Check faded to third.
