Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Blackhawks reached a lowpoint in an already miserable start as Mats Sundin recorded a natural hat trick and the Toronto Maple Leafs seemingly scored at will in a 10-3 rout.

Goaltenders Jeff Hackett and Mark Fitzpatrick appeared helpless against a Maple Leafs' team that had combined for 10 goals in its previous three games. Hackett surrendered six on 21 shots, while Fitzpatrick coughed up four goals on only nine attempts.

Chicago has lost three straight and is mired in an eight-game winless streak, its longest since going 0-10-3 from March 29th-April 23rd, 1995. The Blackhawks had not allowed 10 goals since they were throttled by Boston, 10-3, on October 16th, 1988.

"It's hard to be any unhappier than I was Tuesday, but this is a very difficult night for us," said Chicago coach Dirk Graham, whose job reportedly was in jeopardy before this debacle. "There's not a lot of choices, but you meet adversity head on and work through it.

"There's nowhere for people to hide. But what step can you go to after already being a disgrace to the uniform? The only positive for our coaching staff and management is that things are very evident and there's nowhere to hide."

Derek King had two goals and an assist and was one of six different Maple Leafs to score in the third period. He also started Toronto's first 10-goal game since February 17th, 1989 at 7:35 of the first period. Hackett stopped shots by Dallas Eakins and Mike Johnson before King scored off the scramble.

Sundin took over just under seven minutes later, making it 2-0 with a power-play goal as he snapped a wrist shot from the right faceoff dot between Hackett's pads.

In the second period, Sundin took a pass from Dimitri Yushkevich at the Chicago blue line, beat rookie defenseman Alain Nasreddine and dribbled a wrister between Hackett's pads. Sundin completed his sixth career hat trick at 7:49, taking a perfect cross-ice pass from Tie Domi, shrugging off a check from Ethan Moreau and flicking the puck past a beleaguered Hackett.

"It was one of those nights, especially in the third, where every shot goes in," Sundin said. "Hockey is a strange game. We had 45 shots in Buffalo and got nothing. And tonight, everything we threw at the net went in.

"The whole team got involved. It was a great night and you enjoy it, because nights like this don't come very often. You feel for them on a night like this because you know you've been in a situation like this, too."

Rookie Daniel Cleary finally solved Felix Potvin with 2:01 left in the period to get Chicago on the board, but the Blackhawks were embarrassed in the final stanza.

Goals by Steve Thomas and Fredrik Modin made it 6-1 just over three minutes into the third, ending Hackett's night.

Chicago's Tony Amonte beat Potvin on a breakaway at 7:06, but Garry Valk answered 74 seconds later for the Leafs. He warded off defenseman Doug Zmolek and slid a shot under Fitzpatrick before he was leveled by Amonte. It was Toronto's third goal on as many shots.

"We definitely hit a low tonight and as far as confidence goes, I doubt this team has any," Amonte said. "I'm at a loss for words, I don't know what else I can say. I'm frustrated, the guys and coaches and management and the fans are all frustrated. They want to see us win, but they're frustrated, too, and who can blame them?"

King extended the Maple Leafs' lead to 8-2 with 8:15 to play and defenseman Sylvain Cote got into the act less than two minutes later.

"We moved to the puck pretty well tonight and that's what led to our scoring," explained Toronto coach Pat Quinn. "Our scoring percentage was perfect. Every once in a while you get nights like this."

Rookie Todd White of the Blackhawks and Toronto's Mike Johnson traded power-play goals in the final 5:02.

Chicago got more bad news when captain Chris Chelios suffered a pulled groin in the second period and did not return. He will be re-evaluated on Friday.
