Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- A promising season seems to be in jeopardy for the Charlotte Hornets.

The slumping Hornets suffered a damaging 97-92 loss to the Detroit Pistons, who got 30 points from Jerry Stackhouse and 25 from Chucky Atkins.

The loss, the Hornets' seventh in their last nine games, dropped them 1 1/2 games behind Toronto for the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference standings. Charlotte is just one-half game head of seventh-place Orlando.

A layup by Detroit's Corliss Williamson capped a 10-0 spurt for a 35-26 lead with 3:21 to go before halftime. The Pistons led, 46-37, at halftime as Stackhouse scored 13 in the second quarter.

Charlotte battled back by opening the third quarter with a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to 50-49 with just under eight minutes remaining.

The Hornets were never able to take the lead but a dunk by Jamal Mashburn with just over two minutes left in the third tied it, 61-61. But Detroit closed the period with 10 of the last 12 points as Stackhouse and Atkins each scored five.

A basket by Baron Davis cut the deficit to 82-77 with 4:13 to go. Atkins nailed a 3-pointer for an 85-77 lead just 43 seconds later and added six points in the final 1:40 to seal the victory.

"I thought Charlotte looked tired tonight," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "They played a hard physical game in Miami last night and we were sitting here. It wasn't that we shot the ball that sensationally but we did the right things."

The Hornets exited to a hearty round of boos after falling for the third time in four home games.

"We scored 29 points -- that's almost 30 points -- in the last quarter so that's not the reason," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "The first half we didn't score but 37 points. That was a problem."

Ben Wallace grabbed a career-high 24 rebounds for Detroit, which won for the fourth time in five games. Williamson made 7-of-13 shots for 14 points.

"There's a lot of pride in this locker room," Wallace said. "Even though we don't have a shot to get into the playoffs, we're not ready to quit. Everybody just came out and showed how big their heart was."

Stackhouse made just 11-of-30 shots but converted all seven free-throw attempts. Joe Smith shot 4-of-17 for 11 points to go with seven rebounds.

"We picked the wrong time to really start playing well," said Stackhouse. "We played good offensively late in the game and played tough defense and did the things that we're supposed to do to win games."

Davis and Elden Campbell each scored 20 points to lead Charlotte, which has been eliminated from contention for the Central Division title. Mashburn made just 7-of-23 shots for 18 points one night after connecting on 8-of-25 in a loss at Miami.

"I think the guys are tired but still, you have to give the people their money's worth," Silas said. "So we're trying to win every game. We will look to add some things and shore up some things in our offense, especially. Defensively you don't look to do too much."

Charlotte shot just 39.5 percent (34-of-86), including 3-of-11 from David Wesley. The Hornets did hold a 53-51 rebounding edge, including 13 by P.J. Brown and 12 from Campbell.

The Hornets' bench outscored Detroit's reserves, 21-8.

"We will continue to play hard against everybody," Silas said. "I didn't think we shipped out tonight."
