Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The wild start to the game between the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field had no conclusion. St. Louis led Chicago, 11-9, when the game was postponed due to heavy rains in the top of the fifth inning. No makeup date has been announced. The wind was blowing about 40 miles per hour out to right, and pop-ups to center or right field would blow over the wall. The teams combined for seven home runs, with Tino Martinez hitting two and Albert Pujols a grand slam for St. Louis. Moises Alou and Troy O'Leary smacked two-run homers and Corey Patterson a solo shot for Chicago, but none of them will count. Cardinals starter Brett Tomko surrendered nine runs and nine hits in just 3 2/3 frames - but he was marginally sharper than Chicago's Matt Clement, who was roughed up for 11 runs and 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings. Cardinals right fielder J.D. Drew left in the second inning with stiffness in his back and was replaced by Eli Marrero. Marrero then suffered a severe right ankle sprain trying to avoid a collision with Jim Edmonds on a fly ball to right-center in the fourth, getting his foot caught up on the grass while the rest of his body kept moving forward. He rolled around in agony and had to be helped off the field on a stretcher.
