Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jon Lieber pitched a three-hitter and Fred McGriff carried the offense with a pair of solo home runs as the Chicago Cubs posted a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Lieber (6-4) yielded a home run to J.D. Drew with one out in the first inning and just two singles in his 21st career complete game. The righthander did not walk a batter, struck out seven and posted his fourth straight start. St. Louis starter Woody Williams retired the first 12 batters he faced before McGriff belted a 3-1 pitch over the wall in right-center field. "He was down to me 3-1," McGriff said. "I was looking for something I could drive. I hit a fastball that was going away from me." McGriff came to the plate with one out in the seventh and belted his 13th homer of the season over the right field fence. It marked his 39th career multi-homer game. "He came down and in and I was looking for something inside," McGriff said. Williams (4-3) allowed two runs and three hits in seven innings. He struck out six without surrendering a walk. "I think Woody and I both built some energy off of each other," Lieber said. "When you throw quickly and throw strikes, you sometimes can keep the hitters off balance. We both seemed to have a good thing going today." "It was a fun game to pitch in until Fred took me out a couple of times," Williams said. "I thought I made some good pitches and he beat me on them." Earlier on Friday, former Cardinals broadcaster Jack Buck was laid to rest in a ceremony in St. Louis, a gathering attended by Cardinals manager Tony La Russa. "It's been a very difficult day all the way around," La Russa said. "Burying a close friend and a great baseball man like Jack Buck is tough enough. That's what dominates my thoughts, really. Jack had transcended baseball. He was a great man and left a tremendous legacy behind. "It was an old-time baseball game. Two pitchers throwing strikes and throwing quality pitches. Unfortunately, we came up on the short end but Woody and Lieber pitched great games." Jim Edmonds singled with two outs in the fourth but Lieber induced Tino Martinez to ground out. Two innings later, Fernando Vina singled with one out but Drew struck out and Albert Pujols grounded out to shortstop. "We're finally seeing a healthy Jon Lieber again," Cubs manager Don Baylor said. "We all know his arm was killing him early in the year (but) now we're seeing the 20-game winner come out in him again." Lieber had the only other hit off Williams, a one-out single in the sixth. "He's never pitched a bad game against any team I've been on," Williams said. "He was very impressive today."
