Game Story

Sammy Sosa enjoyed the second three-homer game of his career and Manny Alexander broke an eighth-inning tie with a sacrifice fly to give the Chicago Cubs a 6-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

It was Sosa's 26th career multi-homer game and his fourth this season, all in the last 16 contests. He leaped into third in the National League with 24 homers, one behind Atlanta's Andres Galarraga and seven short of leader Mark McGwire of St. Louis.

"Last year I had a tough time. This year everybody is together and we have much better relationships," said Sosa, who also hit three homers on June 5th, 1996 against Philadelphia. "It's a lot different. I'm just trying to swing at strikes. I'm not looking for any particular pitches, I just want to hit the ball hard."

Sosa clubbed a 1-0 pitch over the wall in right-center field with two outs in the first inning to get the Cubs on the board. It was his 200th homer as a Cub. His next two homers came on 2-1 pitches, a shot to left that made it 4-2 in the third inning and a two-out blast to left-center in the seventh that increased the lead to 5-2.

"Sammy is having a heck of a first half," Cubs manager Jim Riggleman said. "He's working the count in his favor and when he gets his pitch he's not missing it."

"The type of pitcher I am, I'm going to make hitters hit fastballs," Eldred explained. "One pitch was a mistake, and that was a changeup. But if a guy's hot, he's hot, and Sammy's smoking."

Doug Jones (3-3) started the eighth for the Brewers in relief of Cal Eldred, who allowed five runs, including all three of Sosa's homers. Jose Hernandez singled with one out and went to third on a single by Scott Servais before scoring on Alexander's fly ball to left field, putting the Cubs ahead 6-5.

Rod Beck pitched the ninth for his 17th save.

The Brewers rallied in the eighth against Kerry Wood to knot the game 5-5 and get Eldred off the hook. Wood walked Bobby Hughes and pinch-hitter Bob Hamelin to start the eighth in a 5-2 game, and saw catcher Sandy Martinez and manager Jim Riggleman get ejected from the game by home plate umpire Wally Bell for arguing the fourth ball to Hamelin.

"Once I questioned where the pitch was, he immediatley threw me out," Riggleman said. "I guess he was tired of hearing it from Sandy and he had a short fuse."

Wood, whose 21st birthday is Tuesday, rebounded to strike out Fernando Vina but could not handle Jeff Cirillo's bunt down the third-base line that loaded the bases. Wood walked Jeromy Burnitz to allow Milwaukee's third run and left for Terry Adams, who walked John Jaha to make it 5-4. Jaha left for pinch-runner Darrin Jackson, who was erased at second on Dave Nilsson's run-scoring fielder's choice to tie it at 5-5.

Jose Valentin hit his ninth homer in the second inning, a two-run shot off Wood that gave the Brewers a 2-1 edge.

Wood allowed five runs and three hits with six walks and nine strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings.

"Early, I was trying to pinpoint my pitches," Wood admitted. "But in the middle innings I loosened up and felt very comfortable throwing the ball. It was very disappointing to leave the game in the eighth. I feel I let myself and my team down a little bit. But we won, so it doesn't matter."

"Kerry had three different ball games," Riggleman said. "He struggled the first two innings then threw as well as someone can for the next five. Then he struggled again."

Brewers manager Phil Garner agreed with his counterpart's assessment.

"Kerry seemed to struggle a little bit early, but what was impressive was how he settled down and pitched in the middle innings," Garner said. "And then he seemed to tire in the end."

The Cubs took a 3-2 lead in the second. Martinez singled with two outs, stole second and scored on a double by Alexander, who came home on Wood's single.
