Spring Training at Disney: Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves by Ultimate Sports Fan, Andrew

For the first time in 10 years, I saw a tie baseball game. Up to last season, there were only two ways to see a tie baseball game:

1) A long extra inning game in Spring Training.
2) A rainout of an official baseball game (after 5 innings) during the regular season.

However, MLB changed the rules on tie regular season games for the 2007 season. Tie games are now suspended and completed at a later date. So now only #1 is applicable.

The Ultimate Sports Wife and I flew from Chicago to Orlando yesterday afternoon to spend 6 nights in Florida. Since the Braves were playing a night game at Disney’s Wide World of Sports, we drove straight from the Orlando Airport to the Disney Complex.

I had planned to eat dinner at the All-Star Café, which is adjacent to the Atlanta Braves Spring Training facility. However, the All-Star Café is now the Wide World of Sports Café – meaning it changed from a sit down restaurant to a fast food café. Not exactly what we had in mind. Instead, we drove to Downtown Disney and had dinner at Bongo’s (a Cuban restaurant). The best part of Downtown Disney is free parking (compared to Universal Studios).

After eating dinner, we wandered around Downtown Disney and then headed back to the stadium. Before checking out the Wide World of Sports Café earlier, I had bought two upper level seats for $20.50 each. The woman at the ticket office said the Braves never sell out for Spring Training. They will continue to sell lawn seats ($14.50 each).

The game was fairly unexciting. The Nationals scored one run in the top of the 3rd and another in the top of the 6th. At 2-0, I was thinking if the Braves score 2 we may be on our way to a tie game. Of course, they scored two in the bottom of the 9th and played 11 innings until deciding to call it quits. Two ties will now show up under the Braves ‘Luck O Meter’. Lots of games to attend until the next tie game :-).
