GAME RECAP

Safety Jerome Woods returned an interception 13 yards to midfield and Pete Stoyanovich kicked a 41-yard field goal with 1:56 left in overtime to lift the Kansas City Chiefs to a 20-17 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

The win was the fourth in a row for the Chiefs (4-1) following a season-opening loss at Denver.

"This is why you coach," said Chiefs coach Marty Schottenheimer. "You get to share in a victory that is obviously a real tribute to the players in that locker room. They went out, and refused to be denied."

Woods intercepted a long pass from Warren Moon intended for Mike Pritchard at the Kansas City 37 and returned it to midfield with six-and-a-half minutes left in the overtime. The Chiefs then drove 27 yards in nine plays to set up the winning field goal. Quarterback Elvis Grbac scrambled for seven yards and hit Andre Rison with a nine-yard pass to the Seattle 31. Four runs by Marcus Allen moved the Chiefs to the 24 and set up the winning kick.

Stoyanovich kicked a 29-yard field goal 1:46 into the fourth quarter to tie the game at 17-17. The tying field goal capped a 13-play, 58-yard drive that consumed more than seven minutes.

Allen rushed for 78 yards and two touchdowns and Grbac completed 24-of-38 passes for 274 yards, but was intercepted three times. Rison had seven catches for 78 yards.

"I'm just happy to play, to get on the field and contribute," said Allen, who is second all-time with 137 touchdowns. "It was obviously a tough game, but we've been emphasizing all year long the fact, if you keep playing, good things will happen. They did."

"It was a battle," said Grbac. "They came out and played us tough, and did a lot of things defensively to really stop our passing and running game. Obviously, the three turnovers I had really put us in a bind. Offensively, we went up and down the field, and just didn't score points."

Moon was 19-of-26 for 252 yards and two touchdowns with one interception for Seattle (2-3). Lamar Smith rushed for 78 yards on just 12 carries and Pritchard had four receptions for 88 yards.

"I am very discouraged in our loss," said Moon. "I thought our guys played very hard. It was a game of field position. The turnover in overtime hurt us in regards to field position. And on the final interception, I got hit just as I released the ball, so I didn't see it."

A 41-yard touchdown pass from Moon to Joey Galloway in the first quarter and a 44-yard field goal by Todd Peterson 5:26 into the second quarter staked the Seahawks to a 10-0 lead. The field goal capped a 14-play, 61-yard drive that lasted nearly eight-and-a-half minutes.

Allen scored on an eight-yard run with 5:11 left in the first half to pull the Chiefs within 10-7. The touchdown capped an eight-play, 77-yard drive which featured a 20-yard run by Grbac and a 20-yard pass to tight end Derrick Walker.

The Chiefs took their first lead of the game when Allen scored on a one-yard run with 7:03 left in the third quarter. Grbac hit running back Greg Hill with a 27-yard pass to the Seattle 1 to set up Allen's touchdown.

But the Seahawks quickly responded when Moon hit James McKnight with a 54-yard touchdown 1:39 later. Pritchard ran for 14 yards on a reverse before Moon connected with McKnight.

"It was a good game, but we didn't win and that's the bottom line," said Seahawks coach Dennis Erickson. "You have to win football games. We had an opportunity to win. Give the Chiefs credit. They came down and did what they had to do to win it, and we didn't. We turned it over one time at the end."
