GAME RECAP

Olindo Mare's third field goal of the game, a 29-yarder 2:15 into overtime, gave the Miami Dolphins a come-from-behind 16-13 victory over the Tennessee Oilers.

For the second straight week, the defense and special teams of the Dolphins (2-0) bailed out the sputtering offense, which twice bogged down inside the Oilers 10 and has managed just two touchdowns in two games.

Miami, which went to a no-huddle attack in the second half, also benefited from a missed 43-yard field goal by Tennessee's Al Del Greco with five seconds left in regulation.

The Dolphins won the overtime coin toss and Irving Spikes returned the kickoff 48 yards to the Oilers 45. Dan Marino threw a 16-yard pass to running back Bernie Parmalee and, after a running play lost three yards, Marino found Fred Barnett for nine yards.

A 12-yard roughing penalty on the tackle against cornerback Tomur Barnes moved the ball to the 11 and Mare, who earlier missed a 25-yard kick from almost the same spot, split the uprights after two timeouts for his sixth field goal of the season.

"I was just thinking, don't do what I did last time, because the last one was kind of in the same spot and I knew I hit the first field goal bad," Mare said.

It was the second overtime contest in as many games for the Oilers (1-1), who saw Del Greco beat Oakland in their Tennessee debut last week. It also was the fourth straight game in the series decided by four points or less, with the Dolphins winning all four. Miami grabbed a 13-12 lead in the all-time series as it won its fifth straight home opener.

"We stressed all week that the Dolphins are a good team and that they wouldn't do anything to hurt themselves," Oilers coach Jeff Fisher said. "We had to earn every yard we made today and unfortunately we couldn't come up with a play at the end to win."

Marino completed 24-of-43 passes for 324 yards. It was his 53rd career 300-yard game but his first in one-plus years under coach Jimmy Johnson. He also failed to throw a touchdown pass for the second straight week.

"We won the game and that's what's important," Marino said. "I made some throws I had to, but missed some, too. Overall, offensively we need to be able to score with the opportunities that we had inside the 10-yard line."

"Dan Marino had an outstanding game," said Johnson, who has floated the idea of benching Marino. "I told him he's getting a game ball. He's a great, great quarterback, a Hall of Famer."

O.J. McDuffie caught eight passes for 135 yards and running backs caught another nine. Spikes had three catches for 39 yards and Parmalee added three for 38.

The defense somewhat slowed down Tennessee running back Eddie George, who had 106 yards on 23 carries. George ran for a club record-tying 216 yards last week against Oakland.

"We did a great job of hanging in there," Johnson said. "We were backed up against the wall the entire game. Eddie George is a load, somebody to be reckoned with, as are the Oilers."

Quarterback Steve McNair added 62 yards on 11 carries. He also was 7-of-14 for 109 yards, including a 46-yard play-action bomb to Chris Sanders to the Dolphins 22 in the final minute of the fourth quarter. But George lost three yards and Del Greco's potential game-winner was wide right.

"I spent the whole fourth quarter watching the flags on the goalposts and the cups blowing across the field," Del Greco said. "Even in warmups, it seemed like the ball always moved to the left. I kicked it exactly where I wanted to kick it and it just stayed right by about four or five feet. It never came back."

"We played a good football team and had an opportunity to win the ballgame," Oilers coach Jeff Fisher said. "When you have a chance to win it and don't, it usually catches up with you."

Trailing 13-6 entering the fourth quarter and limited to one TD in their first seven periods, the Dolphins tied it on Spikes' two-yard scoring run with 11:21 left.

After spending the first three quarters throwing to his running backs, Marino found McDuffie with a 50-yard pass to the Oilers 18. An interference penalty against rookie Denard Walker on fourth down kept the drive alive.

Marino, the all-time leading passer coming off one of the worst games of his career, engineered an 82-yard drive that used 14 plays and nearly 7 1/2 minutes. He found Spikes with a 24-yard pass and Parmalee with a 13-yarder. But the march died inside the Tennessee 10 and Mare kicked a 23-yard field goal with 9:13 left in the second quarter.

The Oilers responded with a 79-yard drive, capped by a 13-yard TD run by George. Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas, who missed the opener with a broken leg, was called for a 15-yard facemask penalty before McNair hit running back Ronnie Harmon with a 27-yard pass to the Miami 24 on third down.

Tennessee forced a punt, which Mel Gray returned 15 yards to the Oilers 48. Runs of 13 and nine yards by George positioned Del Greco for a 24-yard field goal and a 10-3 lead just 14 seconds before halftime.

In the third quarter, Marino continued to throw to his running backs. Karim Abdul-Jabbar had a 16-yard reception and Spikes added an 11-yarder on third down to keep alive a 15-play drive that again died deep in Oilers territory, with Mare kicking a 22-yarder with 5:27 remaining.

"We had opportunities early in the game and in the second half and had to settle for field goals," Marino said. "We have to be more efficient in that area."

Miami got back the ball, but Barnett fumbled and Tennessee safety Rayna Stewart recovered at the Dolphins 25. Del Greco's 37-yard field goal four plays later extended the lead to 13-6 with 44 seconds left in the period.

Dolphins running back Stanley Pritchett suffered ligament damage to his right knee in the first half and did not return. He will have an MRI on Monday.
