Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jim Edmonds and Scott Rolen were mixing it up with Carlos Zambrano all night but were happy to let their bats do the talking. Edmonds and Rolen hit two-run homers off Zambrano, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-4 victory over the rival Chicago Cubs. The benches emptied twice, once after Edmonds finished his home run trot in the fourth and again after the St. Louis center fielder was hit by a pitch from Zambrano following Rolen's tie-breaking blast in the eighth. "I don't care what the rivalry is or what the circumstances are," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "You are not allowed to cross the line in this game, and their pitcher crossed it twice." Edgar Renteria added a solo shot in the fifth for the Cardinals, who have won 12 of their last 14 games and clinched the season series with Chicago. St. Louis takes a 10-8 edge into the finale between the teams Tuesday afternoon. The homers helped Chris Carpenter (10-4) beat the Cubs for the fourth time this year and reach double figures in wins for the first time since 2001. Carpenter allowed four runs and scattered 12 hits over eight innings. "It was an emotional game to begin with, just with who we are playing," said Carpenter. "But my job is to go out there and make pitches, and I think for the most part I was able to go out there and do that." Jason Isringhausen notched his 23rd save with a scoreless ninth. Zambrano (9-5) gave up five runs and five hits while striking out eight in 7 2/3 innings. The three home runs allowed was a season high for the 6-5 righthander. Moises Alou had a two-run single and solo homer to pace the Cubs, who have lost seven of 10. After tying the game at 3-3 in the fifth and starting the sixth with a leadoff double by Aramis Ramirez, Chicago wasted its last scoring opportunity. Ramirez was thrown out easily at home on a single by Michael Barrett and Alex Gonzalez hit into an inning-ending double play. "I screwed up," Cubs third base coach Wendell Kim said. "I thought I let the city of Chicago down, because it's a game where we can pick up two games on St.Louis. I feel bad I got aggressive at the wrong time. I caused the loss."
