Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jason Schmidt pitched a one-hitter as he upstaged sluggers Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa, outdueled Matt Clement and gave the San Francisco Giants a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The only hit allowed by Schmidt (4-2) was an infield single by Michael Barrett with two out in the fifth. He threw 92 of 144 pitches for strikes as he struck out 13 and walked just one. "I didn't feel too bad," Schmidt said. "Early on, it was cold, so it took a while to get loose. It was a tight game, so you have to feel good." "Well, he said he felt good and he kept getting people out and he was throwing a great changeup and breaking ball," Giants manager Felipe Alou said. "When you run into a guy who's got all those pitches going for him, you're in trouble. That was no-hit stuff." The righthander retired the first eight batters before letting Clement reach on a wild third strike in the third. It was the first of only three baserunners for Chicago. "He was in a groove today," Barrett said. "He had an outstanding fastball and a great changeup. You could tell early that it might be a long day for us." The game was billed as a home run derby between Bonds, who is third all-time with 668, and Sosa, who is ninth with 549. But Sosa sat out and will go on the disabled list Wednesday with a back injury suffered while sneezing, and Bonds, who missed the previous three games with back spasms, was 0-for-2 with two walks. "(Bonds) didnt say anything, but I can tell by a couple of swings he's not 100 percent," Alou said. "Even the ball he hit deep to center field, I could tell it wasn't his best swing." Clement (5-3) was solid, allowing one run, five hits and two walks while striking out six in eight innings. Kyle Farnsworth pitched a hitless ninth. "The last couple of times out, Matt has pitched great, but tonight was Jason Schmidt's night. The guy is one of the best pitchers around," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "He's spotting that fastball and throwing his change up when he wants to. Mix that in with an occasional breaking ball and, well, no discredit to Matt, but it was Jason's night." Pedro Feliz's RBI single in the fourth helped end San Francisco's four-game slide and Chicago's four-game winning streak. "You never want to lose 1-0, but you never deserve anything," Clement said. "You have to work to get what you get and I won't ever use the word deserve. I just went out there and battled, but I faced a great pitcher and he went out there and shut us out." Schmidt had pitched two three-hitters and has six career shutouts. Scott Garrelts pitched San Francisco's last one-hitter on July 29, 1990. Todd Hollandsworth replaced Sosa and was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
