GAME RECAP

Lance Johnson, Mark Grace and Dave Hansen all homered to chase Curt Schilling after five innings, but not before he fanned eight to tie the National League single-season strikeout record for right-handers as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 11-3.

Schilling gave up two-run homers to Johnson and Grace and a solo shot to Hansen in the fifth, but remained on the mound long enough to fan Brant Brown for his 313th strikeout of the year, equaling J.R. Richard's 1979 record by a right-handed pitcher.

"As far as the record goes, it's been a great year for me personally, but it doesn't mean that much when the team struggles like we have," said Schilling. "I still feel good about the future of this team, considering the way we played in the second half."

Schilling (16-11), who surpassed Steve Carlton's club mark of 310 by striking out Sammy Sosa to end the third, finished with eight strikeouts. The right-hander, considered at best an outside shot to win the NL Cy Young Award, allowed six runs and 10 runs over five innings to give him an ERA of 2.95 with the worst team in the NL.

"I don't know what happened to me in the fifth inning," said Schilling. "After I walked Tapani, I probably lost my concentration. The next thing I know, they hit three home runs and I'm coming out of the game."

Ryne Sandberg, in his final game at Wrigley Field, went 2-for-3 with an RBI before being lifted for a pinch-runner in the fifth inning.

"It was great way to end my career here, in front of the home fans," Sandberg said. "I didn't sleep very much last night. I wanted to make sure I went out on a positive note. I reflected on the irony of getting my first hit with the Phillies in 1981 against the Cubs. And now my last hit at Wrigley Field came against this team, my first team."

"I just wanted to thank all the fans in Chicago for making my career an easy one to play in front of the people at Wrigley Field."

Johnson, Grace and Hansen accounted for nine hits, six RBI and six runs for the Cubs, who pounded out 18 hits.

Kevin Tapani (8-3) notched his 100th career victory with his sixth straight win, holding the Phillies to two runs and six hits over seven innings while striking out eight. Ramon Tatis pitched a perfect eigth before Rodney Myers gave up a run while finishing up the ninth.

"It was certainly a historic day here," said Tapani. "It was amazing to see Ryno try to concentrate with all the hoopla and festivities around his last games."

Jose Hernandez padded Chicago's lead in the seventh with his seventh homer, a three-run blast off reliever Ryan Karp. They picked up two more in the eighth when Johnson scored on Reggie Harris' balk and Grace stroked an RBI single.

The Phillies scored their runs on RBI singles by Tony Barron and Midre Cummings and Rico Brogna's run-scoring double.
