GAME RECAP

Scott Rolen and Rico Brogna hit back-to-back homers and the Philadelphia Phillies scored in every inning to hand Mark Clark his first loss in 11 starts with a 10-5 win over the Chicago Cubs in a rain-shortened, 5 1/2-inning game.

Mickey Morandini led off the sixth inning with a single off reliever Ramon Tatis and Kent Bottenfield came in to face Rolen, who hit the first pitch over the left-field wall for his 19th homer and a 9-5 lead. Brogna hit an 0-1 pitch over the right-field wall for his 20th homer, marking just the second time this season that the Phillies have hit back-to-back homers.

"I know we've been through a lot this season, especially early in the year, and that's part of the reason I'm so proud of them," said Philadelphia manager Terry Francona. "Days like today when they don't quit. You can look at the way we ran the bases, and we got better."

Clark (13-8), who was 5-0 in seven starts since coming to Chicago with outfielder Lance Johnson from the New York Mets, gave up five runs and eight hits in four innings. He walked one and struck out four in losing for the first time since July 22nd at Los Angeles.

"You can't judge Clark today because we were so lousy behind him," said Cubs manager Jim Riggleman. "We missed grounders, flies and you can't beat a team giving them four outs an inning."

"With this game, you never know," said Clark, who was named National League Player of the Week after winning consecutive road starts last week. "There's a lot of peaks and valleys out there. One time you can be on top of the mound, and the next time you're not. But baseball can keep you humble."

Darrin Winston (2-0) picked up his second win in as many outings, allowing three runs and four hits in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Jerry Spradlin allowed one hit and retired Ryne Sandberg for the final out in the fifth for his first save since 1993.

The game was called after a third rain delay, which lasted 39 minutes.

Midre Cummings led off the game with a triple and Morandini followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead. The Cubs tied it in the bottom of the frame on Sammy Sosa's run-scoring single.

"It's the kind of game we needed," Morandini said. "There's something about this place or this ballpark that seems to go hand in hand with hitting. I met Michael (Jordan) before the game and he touched my bat and gave it some magic."

With one out in the second, Billy McMillon walked and Tony Barron followed with an RBI double to give Philadelphia a 2-1 edge.

Morandini doubled with one out in the third and third baseman Kevin Orie missed a grounder by Rolen, giving the Phillies a 3-1 advantage. Brogna and Bobby Estalella followed with consecutive singles to make it 4-1.

With two out in the third, Brant Brown hit the first of Chicago's four home runs to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Phillies regained a three-run lead in the fourth when Cummings tripled and Morandini singled him home. Cummings became the first Phillie to triple twice in a game since May 26th, 1996 when Morandini did it against the Atlanta Braves.

Winston relieved Green to start the fourth and Sosa hit a 3-2 pitch over the left-field fence for his 36th homer, pulling the Cubs within 5-3. Sandberg hit a 1-2 pitch over the left-field wall for his 12th homer, marking the fifth time this season that Chicago has hit consecutive round-trippers.

Desi Relaford's two-run double off Dave Stevens gave the Phillies a 7-4 lead in the fifth. With two out in the bottom of the inning, Grace sent Winston's 3-2 pitch over the right-field wall for his 12th homer and Chicago's final run.
