GAME RECAP

Steve Finley homered three times for the second time this year and Tony Gwynn's double snapped a fifth-inning tie as the San Diego Padres outlasted the San Francisco Giants, 11-6.

Finley also hit three homers on May 19th against the Cincinnati Reds. He smacked one off Giants starter Mark Gardner in the third, another off Rich Rodriguez in the seventh and his third off Joe Roa in the eighth. Finley is one of seven players to hit three homers in a game this year and one of two in the National League.

He is the second player in as many years to hit three homers in two separate games in a season. Oakland's Geronimo Berroa accomplished the feat last year, hitting three on the road against the New York Yankees on May 22nd and three at home versus Minnesota on August 12th.

"It seems like I really see the ball well here," Finley said. "I get good pitches to hit and take advantage of it. A lot of times you can get the good pitches but not take advantage of it. I wasn't trying to hit a home run at any time tonight, I was just trying to hit the ball hard to the right side."

Wally Joyner added a three-run homer and a solo shot for San Diego, which won consecutive games for the first time since a six-game winning streak from May 30th-June 4th. The Padres tied a team record with five round-trippers.

Jim Bruske (1-0), brought up from the minors before the game, scattered three hits and a walk over five shutout innings for his first major-league victory. The 32-year-old Bruske had one save in 20 relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers in parts of the last two seasons.

"I heard coming up here that bullpen was being used quite a bit so I knew there was a possibliity that I would get some innings tonight," Bruske said. "In a situation were both teams are scoring a lot of runs you just hope you can put a halt to it. I knew our team was scoring a lot of runs and as long as someone could come in and stop them I knew we would have a chance to win."

"We got a tremendous effort from Bruskie," said San Diego manager Bruce Bochy. "It just shows how important a good bullpen is, even early in the game. We needed some innings out of him and for him to put up all those zeroes really gave us a lift."

Tim Worrell, Doug Bochtler and Trevor Hoffman pitched the final 2 2/3 innings. Hoffman fanned J.T. Snow on three pitches with the bases loaded to end the game. It was his 109th save, passing Rollie Fingers for the all-time Padres' lead.

Mark Gardner (8-3) was bombed for seven runs and 12 hits in five innings for San Francisco, which has lost three of its last four games, allowing 35 runs in that span.

"I stunk it up," said Gardner. "I felt good but I got behind a lot and when you get behind guys like that, they'll eat you alive and that's what happened."

The teams traded four-run first innings. Finley homered with one out and Joyner cracked a three-run homer for San Diego. But Padres starter Will Cunnane allowed a two-run homer to Stan Javier and a two-run double to Damon Berryhill in the bottom half of the inning.

A bases-loaded walk to Archi Cianfrocco in the second gave San Diego a 5-4 lead, but a two-run single by Jeff Kent put the Giants back on top 6-5. Cianfrocco countered with an RBI single in the fourth to tie the game.

In the fifth, Finley singled with two out and came around to score on Gwynn's double into the gap in left-center field. An inning later, Joyner cracked his solo shot to make it 8-6 and Finley hit his second homer in the seventh to push the lead to 9-6.

In the ninth, Rickey Henderson singled before Finley unloaded one more time to complete the scoring. Finley has 10 homers in his last 13 games against San Francisco. It was Joyner's ninth multi-homer game of his career and Finley's fifth.

"He (Finley) hits everything we throw up there," said San Francisco Giants manager Dusty Baker. "Bad pitches, good pitches -- it just doesn't matter. Sometimes a player just likes a certain ballpark. Hopefull, he got it all out of his system tonight."

The 20 hits for San Diego were the most for the Padres since rapping out 21 against Houston on April 27th, 1995. Finley set a team record with 13 total bases, bettering the mark he shared with Nate Colbert, who set the original mark of 12 on August 1st, 1972, when he hit three homers in a game.

Javier finished with four hits in five at-bats and has 30 hits in his last 75 at-bats.
