GAME RECAP

Jeromy Burnitz had a season-high five RBI and Albert Belle went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs as the Cleveland Indians set a club record with 12 doubles en route to a 19-11 rout of the Minnesota Twins.

The first-place Indians won their fifth straight game, maintaining a three-game lead over the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central. Cleveland, which also won its fifth straight on the road, improved to 20-6 against Minnesota over the last three seasons.

The dozen doubles by the Indians tied an American League record, set by the Boston Red Sox against Detroit on July 29th, 1990.

Kenny Lofton had three doubles and three RBI and Mark Carreon had a pair of two-baggers. Lofton also stole his league-leading 43rd base.

The Indians, who posted season highs in runs and hits (22), fell one run short of the team record, set on May 4th, 1991 at Oakland. The two teams combined for 18 doubles, tying the AL record for a nine-inning game and falling five short of the major-league mark.

The Indians broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the fourth, as Burnitz and Lofton had two-run doubles off Twins starter Rick Aguilera (2-4). Cleveland put the game away with five runs in the fifth as Burnitz hit a three-run homer off reliever Mike Trombley and Lofton and Omar Vizquel delivered consecutive RBI doubles for a 12-3 advantage.

The Indians tacked on five more in the sixth for a three-inning total of 15 runs. Manny Ramirez hit a two-run homer, Tony Pena had a three-run double and came home on Alvaro Espinoza's single to give Cleveland an 18-6 bulge.

Consecutive doubles by Carlos Baerga and Carreon in the seventh capped the Indians' scoring. Baerga and Belle each scored four times.

Rich Becker homered twice, tripled, doubled and collected a career-high six RBI for Minnesota, which suffered its fifth straight loss and has dropped eight of nine at home. Becker, who failed at his attempt at the cycle by grounding out in the eighth and striking out to end the game, is batting .452 in his last 10 games.

Indians starter Chad Ogea (5-1) benefited from the support and won, despite allowing six runs and seven hits over five innings.
