GAME RECAP

Hideo Nomo allowed one hit - an infield single by Royce Clayton in the seventh inning - and struck out 11 as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Francisco Giants, 3-0.

Nomo (9-2) pitched 6 2/3 hitless innings until Clayton hit a grounder in the hole between shortstop and third base. Shortstop Jose Offerman backhanded the ball and threw to first but Clayton beat the throw by a step.

It was the fifth complete game and major league-leading third shutout for Nomo, the Japanese rookie sensation who has been one of the most exciting stories of the 1995 baseball season.

"I had a good tempo and rhythm that was the cause of tonight's good pitching," Nomo said.

Ironically, his bid for a no-hitter came on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the most infamous day in his country's history - August 6th, 1945, when the United States dropped the atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, killing an estimated 90,000 people.

Nomo lowered his earned-run average to 1.89. He went 2-for-4 with an R-B-I single in the ninth inning, raising his batting average to .085.

"As far as the hitting, it just happened," Nomo said.

Nomo was bidding for the first rookie no-hitter since Wilson Alvarez tossed one for the Chicago White Sox in 1991. Teammate Ramon Martinez pitched the only no-hitter of this year against Florida on July 14th.

Nomo walked a batter in the second and third innings but set down 14 in a row from the third to the seventh before walking Mark Carreon with two out. Clayton followed with his hit on a 3-2 forkball.

"His split finger was better the last time but he had a lot of giddy-up on his fastball," Clayton said. "He has a very live fastball."

Nomo then set down the final seven batters, striking out four. He extended his season strikeout total to 161, tops in the National League.

"Far as the no-hitter, it doesn't matter to me but I was really satisfied with the way I pitched," said Nomo.

The Dodgers scored twice in the third off Giants starter Jamie Brewington (2-1). With one out, Chad Fonville and Offerman walked. Raul Mondesi then hit a smash off Brewington's foot that deflected into left field for a double as Fonville scored. Mike Piazza followed with a sacrifice fly.

Brewington allowed two runs and five hits over six innings. He walked three and struck out one in his first major-league loss.
